What is depression?

Depression is a mental health condition that can affect mood, thinking, energy, sleep, appetite, and everyday functioning. Some people experience persistent sadness; others mainly notice emptiness, irritability, or losing interest in things that used to matter. NIMH: Depression overview

Major depressive disorder is one form of depression. Diagnosis involves a pattern of symptoms, including depressed mood or loss of interest, generally present most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks, with significant distress or difficulty functioning. A clinician considers the whole picture and other possible explanations. Two weeks is a diagnostic guide, not a reason to postpone help when symptoms are severe or safety is a concern. NIMH: Depression

How is depression different from sadness?

Sadness often follows disappointment or loss and may ease as circumstances change. Depression can persist, spread into several areas of life, and make rest, connection, or enjoyable activities feel less restorative. It can also begin without an obvious trigger. Grief and depression can overlap; you do not have to decide which label fits before asking for support. NHS: Depression overview

What can depression feel like in everyday life?

Depression symptoms can show up in several connected ways:

AreaChanges you might noticeFeelingsSadness, numbness, hopelessness, irritability, or a persistent sense of guilt.InterestHobbies, friendships, or plans feel less rewarding; you stop looking forward to things.ThinkingTrouble concentrating, remembering details, making decisions, or moving past harsh self-criticism.BodyLow energy, disrupted sleep, appetite changes, restlessness, or unexplained aches and stomach discomfort.Daily lifeWithdrawing from people, postponing tasks, or needing much more effort to manage responsibilities.SafetyThoughts about death, self-harm, or suicide, including wishing you would not wake up.

Symptoms need evaluation to understand their cause. The JED Foundation’s depression guide explains these emotional, cognitive, and physical changes.

At an appointment, everyday examples can be more useful than finding the perfect clinical term. “I reread the same email five times” or “I have stopped answering people I care about” gives your provider something concrete to explore.

Watch: Mayo Clinic explains depression

In Understanding Depression: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments, Mayo Clinic psychologist Craig Sawchuk, Ph.D., L.P., explains how depression affects feelings, thoughts, physical energy, and behavior. His overview introduces treatment options and the value of an accurate evaluation.

What causes depression?

Depression usually reflects several influences working together. Family history, biology, psychological experiences, health conditions, and the environment can all contribute. There is no single explanation that fits everyone. NIMH: Depression research overview

Stressful life events, relationship difficulties, trauma, hormonal changes, illness, and limited support may help explain why symptoms developed or became harder to manage. A useful assessment explores these influences without reducing your experience to one cause. Mayo Clinic: Causes and risk factors

Your social environment matters, too. The Depression Looks Like Me resource, created with and for LGBTQ+ communities and sponsored by Johnson & Johnson, discusses how discrimination, rejection, and difficulty trusting health care can add to distress. You deserve care where you can discuss your identity, relationships, and experiences openly.

Are there different types of depression?

The pattern and timing of symptoms help guide treatment:

  • Major depression: Depressive episodes that significantly affect mood and daily life.

  • Persistent depressive disorder: A long-lasting depressive pattern, generally lasting at least two years in adults.

  • Seasonal depression: Depressive episodes that follow a recurring seasonal pattern.

  • Perinatal depression: Depression during pregnancy or after childbirth.

These descriptions are a starting point for a clinical conversation, not a way to diagnose yourself. NIMH: Types of depression

Why a provider asks about unusually energized periods

Depression can also occur in bipolar disorder, which involves episodes of mania or hypomania as well as depression. Tell your provider about periods of unusually elevated or irritable mood, increased energy, or behavior that felt markedly different from your usual self. Your history across time helps distinguish conditions with different treatment needs. NIMH: Bipolar disorder

Depression during pregnancy and postpartum

Perinatal depression can involve intense sadness, anxiety, guilt, difficulty bonding, or exhaustion that makes daily care difficult. Symptoms that are severe or continue beyond the brief early “baby blues” deserve evaluation. You can love your baby and still need mental health support.

Treatment may include therapy, medication, or both, with discussion of pregnancy or breastfeeding and your individual circumstances. Confusion, hallucinations, delusional beliefs, or mania after childbirth can signal postpartum psychosis, a medical emergency. Call 911 or seek emergency care.NIMH: Perinatal depression

What happens during a depression evaluation?

A useful evaluation goes beyond asking whether you feel sad. It explores when symptoms began, how they affect you, previous treatment, health history, and what else could be contributing. Medical conditions or medications can sometimes produce similar symptoms, so physical evaluation or testing may be appropriate. Mayo Clinic: Understanding diagnosis

To prepare, jot down:

  • What has changed in your sleep, energy, mood, relationships, or responsibilities.

  • Medications and supplements you take, including anything you recently started or stopped.

  • Previous treatments, what helped, and side effects you found difficult.

  • What you most want help with, such as enjoying family time or getting through mornings.

You can also bring questions: “What else could explain this?” “What are my options?” “How will we know the plan is helping?” You do not need a polished account of your life to begin.

What treatments help with depression?

Treatment depends on severity, history, preferences, safety, and practical circumstances. Options include psychotherapy, medication, support with daily routines, or a combination. More severe symptoms may require specialist or intensive care. NHS: Depression treatment overview

Therapy and counseling

Psychotherapy can help you understand patterns in your thoughts, emotions, behavior, and relationships. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), for example, helps people examine unhelpful thinking and practice more useful responses. Therapy can also build coping and problem-solving skills and provide a place to work through difficult experiences. It may be used on its own or alongside medication. NIMH: Psychotherapies

If you are looking for depression counseling in Newport Beach, ask what kind of therapy a provider offers, how visits are structured, and whether the approach fits your goals. At Mind Over Matter, supportive therapy may be integrated with medication management; the appropriate visit format can be discussed when arranging care.

Medication and follow-up

Antidepressants can reduce depressive symptoms, but responses and side effects vary. Many take several weeks to work; sleep or energy may improve before mood. Follow-up allows you and your prescriber to assess benefits, address problems, and decide whether the plan needs adjustment.

Discuss side effects, including sexual concerns, openly. Contact your prescriber promptly if a medication seems to be worsening your symptoms. People of all ages need monitoring, especially early in treatment; antidepressants can increase suicidal thoughts or behavior in some people under 25. Do not stop or change a prescribed medication without guidance.NIMH: Mental health medications

At your visit, ask when to check in, what changes to watch for, and how to get help between appointments. You should understand the plan before leaving.

When treatment has not helped enough

An incomplete response is a reason to reassess. Bring a record of previous medication names, doses, duration, benefits, and side effects. The term treatment-resistant depression is often used when symptoms have not improved after at least two adequate antidepressant trials. It does not mean all options are exhausted. Depression Looks Like Me: Persistent symptoms after treatment

Specialist options can include transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) or electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). ECT may also be considered earlier for certain severe or life-threatening presentations. These treatments require assessment and are delivered in appropriate clinical settings. NIMH: Brain stimulation therapies

Ask your clinician whether continued outpatient care, another treatment approach, or a higher level of support best fits your needs.

What can you do when everything feels hard?

Start with a step small enough to attempt today. Basic routines, manageable activity, and connection can support mental health, while worsening or persistent symptoms warrant professional help. NIMH: Do I need help?

  • Make one task smaller. Choose a simple meal rather than planning a week of cooking.

  • Create one point of connection. Send a trusted person a brief message about how you are doing.

  • Try gentle movement. Choose an amount that fits your health and energy today.

  • Prepare for care. Save the appointment link or ask someone to sit with you while you contact a provider.

These are possible starting points, not a test you have to pass before receiving treatment.

If someone you love is struggling

Try asking, “You seem worn down. How have things been?” Listen before offering solutions. Offer practical help with meals or arranging a visit, and encourage professional support without blame. JED: When to get help

Common questions about depression

Can I be depressed if I am still working and taking care of people?

Yes. Continuing to meet responsibilities does not tell the whole story about how you feel. People sometimes call this “high-functioning depression,” but that phrase is not a formal diagnosis. Tell your provider about both your symptoms and the effort it takes to manage daily life. Mind Over Matter: Depression care FAQs

Can depression be treated without medication?

Sometimes. Therapy and other supports may be appropriate, particularly for less severe symptoms. Other people benefit from medication or a combination. Discuss your preferences and symptom severity with a qualified clinician. NHS: Treatment options

Can I get a depression evaluation through telehealth?

Yes, when virtual care is appropriate. An evaluation can include discussion of your symptoms and history, a diagnosis when supported, and a treatment plan. Additional assessment may still be needed. Mind Over Matter offers telepsychiatry for adults throughout California. NIMH: Virtual mental health services

What if I do not know whether I need therapy or medication?

That is a reasonable place to start. Tell the provider what has been difficult and what you hope will change. Ask them to explain the options, the reasoning behind their recommendation, and how you will review progress together. NIMH: Choosing care
